Short answer

Job seekers: Teal is the best free profile review (Chrome extension); Jobscan is the only one that tunes your keywords against the job ads you're targeting; Resume Worded has the most reviews (Trustpilot 4.8 from 3,009). Creators and founders: profile tools matter less than posting; free headline and About generators from Supergrow, Taplio or Flypost are enough. Photo: Aragon AI from $35. And skip any advice to 'turn on Creator Mode': LinkedIn retired it in 2024.

"LinkedIn profile optimizer" covers two different jobs. Job seekers want recruiters to find them, so keywords, completeness and matching job ads matter most. Creators and founders want a visitor who arrived from a post to understand in five seconds why they should follow, so the headline and About section do the work, and the posts do the rest.

We checked every tool's own page and its independent reviews on 28 October 2026. Review counts are given with every rating, because 4.8 stars from 3,000 reviews means something and 5.0 from 6 doesn't.

For job seekers

Teal: the best free review

Teal's review walks through your photo, banner, custom URL, headline, About, experience and skills in a side panel, with a "check again" button once you've made changes. It needs Teal's Chrome extension, whose store listing doesn't mention the profile review, so it's easy to miss once installed.

Jobscan: the best for a specific job

Paste your profile URL and at least three job descriptions, and Jobscan scores your profile against them and suggests keywords for your headline, summary and skills. No other tool here tunes against the real job ads you're applying to. Trustpilot reviewers complain about unexpected renewals and cancelling by email only.

Resume Worded: the most reviewed

Resume Worded scores your profile against top profiles and suggests headlines and summaries. It has by far the largest independent review base of the job-seeker tools, but it's unclear how much of the review is free and how much needs Pro.

Careerflow: in-place guidance

Careerflow's extension adds a score and a 14-section checklist on your actual profile, updating as you edit. The AI writer for headline and About is paid ($23.99/mo), and Trustpilot reviewers say there's no direct way to delete an account.

Built into LinkedIn

Profile Writing Assistance suggests a headline and About section and proofreads experience entries, but only for "a select group" of Premium subscribers. The Social Selling Index (SSI) scores you 0 to 100 across four elements (professional brand, finding the right people, engaging with insights, building relationships). It's a useful direction but gives no specific actions, and it measures activity rather than profile quality.

For creators and founders

If you're building an audience rather than job hunting, an optimiser score matters far less than what you post. Visitors land on your profile from a post; the headline has to say who you help and why to follow. The free headline and About generators from Supergrow, Taplio and Flypost are enough for that. Taplio's paid plans don't include profile optimisation; they're content tools.

Then put the effort into posts: in our study of 116,000+ posts, personal stories earned 33% more reactions and posts with an image 35% more. See what actually works on LinkedIn.

Photo and banner

  • Aragon AI makes AI headshots from selfies: $35 for 40 headshots. It has the biggest review base on this page, though some reviewers say results can look obviously AI-generated.
  • Canva has free LinkedIn banner templates at the right size (1584 × 396), some marked Pro.

Eight profile fixes that need no tool

  1. Add a photo. LinkedIn has said members with a photo get 21 times more profile views (a 2018 figure, but the direction holds).
  2. Shoot it simply. Look at the camera, frame from mid-chest up, use a plain bright background and soft light.
  3. Get the size right. Photo 400 × 400 px or larger, under 8MB. Banner 1584 × 396 px.
  4. Keep the banner's left side clear on desktop (and its centre on mobile), where your photo sits.
  5. Claim a custom URL: 3 to 100 characters, no spaces or symbols. You can change it 5 times in 6 months.
  6. Ignore "turn on Creator Mode" advice. LinkedIn retired it in March 2024; the Follow button is now on every profile.
  7. Put keywords in your posts, not profile hashtags, which LinkedIn also removed in 2024.
  8. Use SSI as a direction, not a target.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free LinkedIn profile optimizer?

Teal's LinkedIn Profile Review is described as 100% free and checks your photo, banner, URL, headline, About, experience and skills through its Chrome extension. Careerflow's scan and checklist are also free; its AI writer is paid.

Does LinkedIn have a built-in AI profile writer?

Yes, for a select group of Premium subscribers: Profile Writing Assistance suggests a headline and About section and proofreads experience entries. It isn't available to everyone, even on Premium.

Is Creator Mode still on LinkedIn?

No. LinkedIn removed profile hashtags in February 2024 and the Creator Mode toggle in March 2024. The Follow button is now available to everyone, and members who had Creator Mode kept its tools.

What size should a LinkedIn banner be?

1584 × 396 pixels. Your profile photo overlaps the banner on the left on desktop and in the centre on mobile, so keep important content clear of both areas.

What is a good LinkedIn SSI score?

The Social Selling Index runs from 0 to 100 across four 25-point elements. Treat it as a direction rather than a target: LinkedIn doesn't publish specific actions to raise it, and it measures activity rather than how good your profile is.
