Short answer

You can run LinkedIn well for free. LinkedIn's own composer schedules posts up to 3 months ahead and shows post analytics. For formatting and previews, use AuthoredUp's or Supergrow's free formatter and Supergrow's free post preview. For carousels, Postbeam's free generator (no signup, no watermark) or Canva Free. For writing, ChatGPT or Claude's free tiers. For a free third-party scheduler, Buffer Free (3 channels, LinkedIn profiles and pages). Hootsuite has no free plan.

"Free" in this category usually means "free for 7 days". This list only includes tools whose core job costs nothing with no time limit. We checked each one on 28 October 2026. Four of the tools below are Flypost's own free tools: we've marked them, and they sit alongside the competitors' versions so you can pick.

LinkedIn's own free features

Start here: they're free, built in and carry no account risk.

  • Post scheduler. In the composer, click the clock icon to schedule from 10 minutes to 3 months ahead, on desktop or mobile. Event and job posts can't be scheduled, and for company pages the window starts at 1 hour. How to use it.
  • Post analytics. Impressions, members reached, reactions, comments, reposts, saves, sends, link clicks and viewer demographics for every post. Only "who viewed your profile since this post" needs Premium.
  • Document (PDF) posts. Upload a PDF, PowerPoint or Word file (up to 100MB, 300 pages) and LinkedIn shows it as a swipeable "carousel". Every carousel tool below publishes this way.
  • Newsletters. Free once you have 150+ followers or connections and post original content.
  • Social Selling Index. A 0 to 100 score at linkedin.com/sales/ssi, widely reported as free for logged-in members.

Free post formatters and previews

Tool What's free Signup
AuthoredUp Text Formatter Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, lists, live preview No
Supergrow Text Formatter Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough No
Supergrow Post Preview Desktop and mobile preview with the "see more" fold, no usage limits No
LinkedInPreview.com Formatter plus mobile, tablet and desktop preview; says it's open source No
Flypost Post Formatter (ours) Bold and italic, shows where the fold lands No
Flypost Character Counter (ours) Live counts against post, headline, About and comment limits No

One caution from Supergrow's own FAQ: Unicode "bold" isn't indexed by LinkedIn search, so don't put keywords you want found in it.

Free carousel makers

Tool What's free The catch
Postbeam Carousel Generator PDF carousel, no signup, no watermark AI limits not stated
Supergrow Carousel Generator Slide editor, PDF or image export, no login Watermark status unclear
Canva Free Thousands of templates, PDF export You design it yourself; account needed
Reepl Carousel Generator Design without login Account to download; watermark on inside slides
Flypost Carousel Generator (ours) Five templates, your colours and fonts, PDF download, no account AI drafts capped at 3 from a topic and 2 from a blog post per day

Carousels are worth the effort: in our study of 116,000+ posts they earned about 11% more reactions. More in the best carousel generators.

Free hook, headline and post generators

A warning on hooks: in our data, posts that opened with a question earned 17% fewer reactions, and first-person openers 19% more.

Free schedulers

Tool Free plan Limits
LinkedIn's built-in scheduler Unlimited One post at a time; no calendar
Buffer Free 3 channels, LinkedIn profiles and pages 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time
Publer Free 3 accounts 10 scheduled posts each; published posts drop out of history after 24 hours
Typegrow AI writer, scheduler, carousels Free for now; a paid plan is in development

Not free: Hootsuite (14-day trial, then from $99/mo), AuthoredUp's editor and Supergrow's app (trials only).

When free stops being enough

Free tools cover formatting, one-off carousels and scheduling. What they don't do is remember who you are: your voice, your stories, your past posts. That's what the paid tools charge for. If you post several times a week, see the best LinkedIn AI tools and what each really costs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free LinkedIn scheduler?

LinkedIn's own scheduler (the clock icon in the composer) for a single profile. For a third-party queue, Buffer's free plan covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each, including LinkedIn profiles and pages.

Is there a free LinkedIn post preview tool?

Yes. Supergrow's LinkedIn Post Preview is free with no account and shows the desktop and mobile 'see more' fold. LinkedInPreview.com is another free option.

Does bold text in LinkedIn posts hurt reach?

Bold and italic on LinkedIn are Unicode characters, not real formatting. Supergrow's own formatter warns that Unicode text isn't indexed by LinkedIn search, and screen readers can struggle with it, so use it sparingly.

Is the LinkedIn SSI score free?

The Social Selling Index at linkedin.com/sales/ssi is widely reported as free for logged-in members, without Sales Navigator. It scores you 0 to 100 across four 25-point elements but doesn't tell you what to do to raise it.

Does Hootsuite have a free plan?

No. Hootsuite offers a 14-day trial, with paid plans from $99 a month.
